Step Back in Time
There's no shortage of fun in the sun in Fort Myers Beach but would you believe this is also one of the most intriguing historical areas in the Sunshine State? For a look at our legends and lore, head to the Southwest Florida Museum of History, where in-depth exhibits and artifacts that tell the story of the area's Calusa and Seminole Indians, Spanish explorers and earliest settlers. You'll see a 1929 private Pullman rail car (complete with brass fixtures and Cuban mahogany) and a replica of a pioneer "cracker" house. You'll also find a fair share of fellow historians who're taking a break from the beach to explore a more cerebral side of Fort Myers. Even the location is a step back in time - it's housed in the old Atlantic Coastline Railroad Depot. Afterwards, drop by the gift shop for a look at artwork by local artisans and some terrific books on local history.
